Howling

I have two dogs, one that is 8 and another that's about a year and a half. When I leave the house to go to work, everything is fine, dogs are in their area. When I take the older dog out for a walk to younger one just howls. How can I get her to stop doing this? She only does it when she is alone - when the other dog is there she is fine.

I would suggest either walking both dogs together, or walking the one that howls first to tire her out, giving her a treat when finished. Also, leave a radio or television on while you are walking the other dog. She's obviously howling b/c she isn't getting to go on the walk. Dogs of the same pack enjoy walking together.

I have tried walking the howler first, I have left the tv on. I generally walk around this large field that has a sidewalk that can been seen from the deck - I do this walk so she can see us, that doesn't seem to help. I've walked where she can't see us - doesn't help. I give her treats when she isn't howling when we get back, I tell her 'no howl' before we leave on the walk. You name it. I can't leave the windows open because she is so loud - I can even hear her across the field and it is quite a distance. Sometimes she howls the entire time we are gone, sometimes she doesn't. Any suggestions?

Yes, I have tried crating her as well. She only does this when she is totally alone - if the other dog is there she's quite as a mouse (although she didn't used to be). I keep hoping she'll stop....

Even when I take her first she does this. I can't walk her long enough to tire her out taking her first, this would literally take hours she has soooo much energy!
