Our Yorkie pup is 5 mos old. Now we have taken in a 6 week old kitten. They love each other and our yorkie is not at all mean but he plays very hard with the kitty. How can we get him to be more gentle when he is playing with the kitten. We dont want them to loose their spirit. but the kitty is so little
If the your puppy cares about the little kitten and thinks of it as family then I would think that it would not intend to hurt the kitten and that if it did and the kitten cried then it would learn and stop. However I completely understand your worries and I suggest possibly putting a lead on the dog and leaving it on while they are playing, if your puppy becomes too rough then pull sharply on the lead, he will learn that if he plays gently he doesnt get interrupted. The kitten will soon grow and start to defend itself if it feels threatened
Good answer!! We will use the lead idea. So far the baby crying does not get him to let up. We have been removing him from the situation by putting him in his pen and/or the kitty in her box.
I just wanted to let everyone know that I tried using the lead on our yorkie when he got too rough with the kitty. After one time now when we get the lead out he simmers right down. Worked like a charm. He IS used to the lead as we always take him outside with it. We have a really really smart yorkie. Thanks for your help.
