If strangers come into the gate or even the house , our dog nips at their heels and runs away, only to come back again and again. He has drawn blood. How can I prevent this from happening?
What breed is he? How old is he? Is he neutered? How long have you had him? When did this problem start? Does he nip or bite any other times? Overall how obedient is he?
To prevent this, you might want to leash him and make him sit when someone comes to the door but I would like to know more about your dog.
I whole heartedly agree with MHN, to correctly figure out how to train a dog or break a bad behaviour is to identify the contributing factors -when it started, if it only occurs with certain people/places, etc. How old is the dog, is he neutered? And so on...
As a way to start, I would limit his access to the front door, so that guests can get through unharmed. When he starts to get worked up over a guest (regardless of where he is), tell him "no" and put him somewhere quiet, away from the guests and noise, to calm down. Using a leash when he is out with guests is a good idea.
