I have a 10 month old springer spaniel lab mix. we live on 11 acres which are not fencend between neighbors property. he insist on spending all his time at their house. I do not want to keep him tied up, how can I keep him on his own property? we are considering the underground electric fencing. is this an effective method?

Thanks
Pam

Pam....the electric fencing is a great way to deal with this problem but fencing in your whole property would be very expensive. Are you thinking of doing the property line or just an area around the house? Its so weird how some dogs stay close to home and others want to wander away. Is your dog neutered? If not, that may help. Unaltered dogs tend to wander a lot more than "fixed" ones.

You have a fantastic amount of land for dogs. You shouldn't be having this problem and I feel for you. You may want to give it another 6 months before investing in the fence, and hope that as your dog ages he will stay closer to home. In the mean time, work on "come" and "stay" commands a lot. Praise him with treats if he stays close by.

I wish you luck. If you can afford the fencing, it may be worth doing. It will work, but remember to follow the training guidelines that come with the fence.
