Electric fence.

In order to stop my dogs from escaping I have been looking at electric fences. I'm keen to use a wire fence rather than the electronic one that would require the dogs to wear collars.

So far I've not found any marketed at dogs, only horses. I'm concerned about buying one that will cause the dogs too much pain! Can anyone tell me what voltage would be acceptable for dogs?

I would like to stress that I am considering this as a last resort. My dogs escaped yesterday and killed two of the neighbours dogs. I want to prevent this from happening again.

Maybe you could try contacting your vet with regards to the voltage...they may also be able to put you in touch with a manufacturer or supplier.

Where do you live? In the US, you can buy electric fences at Petsmart or there are companies who can put them in for you.

I'm in Spain. I've seen them on e bay and have now been told by someone who has one that it should be fine for the dogs.

I also was interested in electronic fence I have a minature beagle that just won't stay in his yard, but then read that it can cause disease because it weakens their immune system has anyone heard this.

I've never heard that and I don't really see how it could!

I've since bought an electronic fence with collars for the dogs. The haven't escaped once since we got them so I'm very happy with it.

Thanks so much. I found it hard to believe also and I spoke with lady at WalMart and she had bought an electronic fence at Bass Pro Shop for $300. I'm going to check it out. I couldn't see how they could sell it if it is proven it hurts your animal surely some group advocates would have gotten them off the mark. But alternative of dog harrassing neighbors or getting hit should out way some of the negatives. I live in rural OK and have 2 acres most of my neighbors aren't speaking to me because of him, not that I care if that's how they are oh well. Most don't like animals to begin with. Thanks again.
