I have a Standard Poodle trained for obedience. In the Open Ring he performs all the exercises consistently with a qualifying score until we get to the group exercise sit and down with the handler out of sight. As soon as I leave the ring he starts looking for me and gets up. When we train this doesn't happen. My suspicion is that our training site is familiar and the show sites are not. Any suggestions would be welcome.
Are there any other dog clubs around you? Training clubs often offer practice sessions open to members of other clubs. This would give you a means not only of proofing your dog in new surroundings, but with different dogs.
As cbritos suggests getting as much practice in different environments and with different dogs and people around is the key. As well as trying to practice with different clubs you could also try practicing at different parks and areas with dogs of friends. The wider the variety of environments you practice in the more confident your dog will be that whatever the situation he will be safe on his own and you will return.
