My 3 and a half month old rottweiler puppy is vomitting and has diarrea, this morning I noticed a little blood in his stool. I am giving him 10ccs of pedialyte every hour and trying to convince him to eat but with no success. Can anyone help me? Someone told me its a parasite,

Hi, just wanted to let you know that the problem has been solved, called a vet over who told me the puppy had not been vaccinated. The person who sold it to me had said taht he had been vaccinated three times and that the next one was not due for a year, either he lied or the vet he used fooled him. Either way my puppy is sleeping now after all the drugs and we will apply the vaccines in a week or so.

Hi Ricardo,

Thank you for writing in to us. I am really sorry to hear about your puppy.

From what you have described, it seems to me that your puppy has been infected with Parvovirus. Here is a link to it's description if you would like to know more about it-
http://www.merckmanuals.com/vet/digestivesystem/diseasesofthestomachandintestinesinsmallanimals/canineparvovirus.html

It would be great if you could start him on some antibiotic treatment. It is to prevent him from getting any secondary bacterial infections. Please discuss what drug to give him with your veterinarian. You could ask about an anti-nausea pill as well.

As for his nourishment right now, please continue on the fluids and make sure he doesn't get too dehydrated. You could try boiling plain rice, non-fatty chicken/beef mince with vegetables (no onions-they are toxic) and feeding him. Keep him someplace quiet and warm so he can get lots of rest. Make sure he isn't around other puppies/ unvaccinated dogs.

Parvovirus can be a fatal disease, so I highly recommend getting him into a veterinary clinic as soon as possible.

All the best, I hope he recovers soon.

Kind regards,
Preethi.

Thanks Preethi, the vet got here and applied another serum along with some drugs for the vomitting, he said he would be back later to apply antibiotics.

Hi Ricardo,

I am glad to hear that you got the vet in to treat him quickly. Was it diagnosed as Canine Parvovirus?

It breaks my heart to hear of stories like yours. Just for the sake of saving money, many breeders cheat their customers regarding vaccination schedules and put the dog's life at risk.

If you have confirmation on what disease it is and if the person you bought it from did claim to have had your puppy vaccinated for it, I would suggest you make it known to them and give them a good telling off. Doing so will hopefully prevent it from happening to another puppy later on.

Good luck with your puppy. Please do keep me posted on his progress.

Kind regards,
Preethi

Preethi, its not good news, my puppy died today and yes it was Canine Parvovirus. The vet told me we didn't catch it in time and that the puppy was really at the end, my wife saw him die this afternoon while I was at work, I really thought he was going to make it but he didn't. Even though I only had him for a month I can't really describe how much that hurt... I really need to have a dog where I live due to insecurity but I'm not sure I'm ready for another one yet...

Regards, Ricardo Jaar.

Hi Ricardo,

I am really really sorry to hear that you lost your four legged friend. You did everything you could to help him, it is unfortunate that Parvo is such an aggressive disease. I empathize with you, I know just how much it hurts.

However, from my own previous experiences, I can assure you there are two great healers with this kind of loss-
1. Time- most things heal gradually over time and 2. Another happy tail-wagger- this is bound to speed up your healing process. I am not suggesting you get a puppy right away. Infact, I would recommend you wait about a month and clean your home thoroughly a few times to get rid of any parvovirus remnants. Do this by using a 1 part bleach:30 parts water solution. What I am suggesting is that you go and visit/volunteer at your local SPCA and see how therapeutic the experience will be. Do this a few times and you will soon be ready to grab yourself another bundle of joy. Make sure you discuss preventative measures with you vet, parvovirus is quite prevalent in the environment and it is recommended that pups are kept indoors until their immunity to it has kicked in.

I look forward to hearing from you when you do get another puppy. Once again, my heartfelt sympathies to you and your wife.

Kind regards,
Preethi
