My 1 year old Puglier is house trained but for some reason urinates on her bedding inside the house and in the backyard. The backyard bedding really does confuse me as I have reprimanded her on the occasions she has been caught. The other confusion is she will lay in her soiled bed and chew bones and eat food.
Please help me

Hi vicki.m77,

The first thing I would do is to find out if she has urinary tract infection (UTI) or not.

Does she also wet the carpet or anywhere else than her beds? If it's just her bed, can you use an old blanket or something instead of the soiled bed (even if it's washed it still has the smell) and see if she soil that one too?

Thanks for your response Max, she is fit and healthy so I do not think it is an infection and I have watched her walk directly to her bed in the backyard and urinate on it intentionally. She will mark anything lying on the ground I have tried foam, pillows, blankets and rubber mats which is frustrating because the other dogs miss out on having nice beds to lay in.

You have multiple dogs! So, this is definitely marking

Did you recently add new dog(s)? Can you think of any changes in her life that coincides with this behavior?

When I get a new foster dog that has marking habits, I tied them onto me with a leash inside the house for the first couple of days to catch them in the act to correct the behavior.

You need to catch the action to reprimand and you cannot watch her all the time so you might want to leave her in a crate whenever you have to leave her. It is best to do this on the weekend when you will have more time to dedicate to this.

I hope someone else can give you more tips

It does sound like your Puglier is marking - it may be a stress response to a new addition dog, or just getting older and trying to be more dominant. Is she speyed? You might look into getting her fixed, it may help with inappropriate marking.

Most vet shops and pet stores sell pet urine deodorizers - I would suggest getting some and going over the areas you don't want her marking. Its a start to help hopefully decrease her behaviour.

I would limit her access to the areas she's urinating in (your other dogs' beds in the very least). Try seperating her bed from the other dogs so she doesn't feel such the need to mark it as hers.

It is weird that she's urinating where she eats - normally food in the area is enough deterrant for most dogs to not pee somewhere. Is she crate trained at all? You can try decreasing the space of her eating area/sleeping area so that theres less room. Less room may help stop her because she won't be able to mark and sit in the same area without actually being in her urine. Start feeding her all her meals around her bed, and leave her food bowls there.

You can try other ideas like picking her bed up during the day - so she can only sleep overnight in it and its not down on the floor where she can mark it. Do the same with the other objects she's consistently marking.

We can probably help more if we know things like how long you've had all your dogs, how old the other dogs are, what the social hierarchy is in the house (how do all the dogs interact daily). Hope my response makes sense so far
