Soiling indoors

I am the owner of two rescue dogs, Charlie, a Tibetan terrier mix and Gizzi a dachshund, terrier, shitzu mix.

I first got Charlie and within a week he was already housetrained. One and a half years later I got Gizzi at 7 months. She had lived with an old woman in an apartment and had not been housetrained...

Both dogs are neutered and I have a dog door so that they have access to a rather large garden day and night. For some reason Gizzi will not use it at night or she will use it but she will not do her business outside!!!

All the dogs which I have owned in the past have been completely housetrained and would never go close to where they had done their business, but Gizzi doesn’t care. She will walk or lie next to her pee and pooh without a care in the world.

Things are now becoming worse because Charlie has started to follow in the same footsteps and pee in the hallway in the morning or at night! Especially if it’s raining because he doesn’t like to get wet.

I thoroughly clean and spray the area with vinegar but nothing seems to help. Sometimes Gizzi will not do something for two days and I am thinking to myself, wow she has finally got it and then there it is again!

The thing is that I do not want to crate my dogs (which we do not tend to do in Europe) also if I were to restrict the area Gizzi, would just pee on the carpet in my bedroom, which she has already done.

I have tried soaking kitchen towel paper in her pee and then putting it outside to make her understand that she needs to go there and not inside. She has got no concept and will even stand and eat the grass next to the soiled paper.

I would really appreciate any tips on how I can stop this behaviour.

Hi Helena,

Has Gizza always had this problem or is it something that gradually developed? Did you housetrain the two dogs in the same way?

Does Gizza use the door during the day to go outside? Or is it just at night? Have you tried making sure she pees before bed and restricting water after a certain time at night, just to help your chances? Most older dogs wont get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, they should be able to go all night without a break, so if you take her out right before bed and don't let her in until she pees, it might help.

If its a problem she has round the clock, and has had since you've had her, it might have a medical background, you could take her to the vet for a checkup, just to be sure its not physiological incompetance at some point in her urinary tract.

Could you try seperating the two at night, putting Charlie without access to the door maybe, since he's better at housetraining? That could help cut down on his mismarking in the house.

If I can get a better feel for the problem, I can find better suggestions, thanks very much

Helena,

I have no suggestions on the housetraining, just wanted to comment on Gizza. From your description, it sounds as if her original owner did not give Gizza any access to a regular toilet area. Maybe left her in a crate after she'd soiled herself (a puppy in a small crate left all night, for example) and Gizza lost the instinct to stay out of her messes. This does happen and someone on the forum may know how to re-induce that natural instinct your other dogs have had.

Good luck,

Hi Caroline and kjd,
Gizzi has had this problem ever since we got her from the animal shelter. She was 7 months then. The lady who had her before never took her out and never housetrained her. I must say that she has improved to what she used to be like before, but still she pees and poohs inside, mostly at night and occasionally during the day as well.
I do take her out in the evening in the garden but I can stand there for half an hour or so and nothing…she is more interested in eating grass then doing her business.
The dogs don’t necessarily sleep in the same bedroom at night and Gizzi tends to move about around 4 am in the morning and changing rooms. I am afraid that it’s this time she’s most active with her soilin.

Hi, Helena,

I understand that you don't want to crate Gizzi, but is it possible to confine her to the kitchen area? Can you close off a spot so small she can only stand up and turn around in it? This would just be for the night. Also, you might try setting your alarm for 3:30 AM and taking her out for a bit just until you are confident she isn't soiling in the house. Then you can stop the early morning or start making it later and later, until she is used to getting up at your regular time. Once that is going well, you could gradually increase the size of her bedroom, until she again has the run of the house. If she soils, you have to backtrack to where she doesn't.

I realize this is a lot of work, but you have an "abused" dog -- being forced to be around her own messes was a form of abuse, even though her owner didn't think of it this way. You are not only housebreaking her, you are re-training her to sleep away from her messes.

Good luck,
kjd
