Toy Poodles (2) weeing when not at home or during the night

I have two desexed toy poodles (brother and sister) who are 3 years old. They are inside dogs (we have cold weather). They have a doggie door to our back courtyard through which they access the backyard to do their doggy business. When we are at home (day and evening) they use the doggie door and go out to the backyard to wee without any problem.

However, when we are asleep at night my female dog wees and/or poos in the courtyard and her brother (being a male) wees over the top of hers. If we are all out during the day our female either goes in our house or in the courtyard. She refuses to go to the back yard at those times. We show distaste when we find it but we haven't caught them actually doing it.

I am not sure how to approach the matter as I have double trouble to manage. They are just perfect in every other way but mopping up is exhausting.

Hi there,

Thanks for writing in. Your problem does sound like double trouble! We may not be able to fix it given that it is happening only when you are away - we might have to just manage it better.

Would you consider keeping them in the courtyard when you are out - a nice cozy kennel may be a good option? If not consider using puppy pads and placing it in a spot that you would rather her go inside so it is easier clean up? A bathroom, for example. I would recommend getting a commercial deodorizer and cleaning up her previous incidents thoroughly. You probably already do this, but just in case- ensuring that they are both taken outside to toilet prior to your leaving will also help lower the incident rate.

All the best!

Thanks Preethi

Will consider all that you suggest - and will ensure that family takes dogs out for a wee every time they leave the house. Hopes for improvement - at least during the day...
